EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
