Pick of the Week
The Substance
Director Coralie Fargeat's bold critique examines the oppressive nature of feminine aesthetics as well as the perceived horrors of growing older. Hollywood star Demi Moore presents a masterful portrayal as Elisabeth, a 50-year-old film star forced into starring in a fitness program on TV. Forced aside due to her unscrupulous employer Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she seeks out an enigmatic and gruesome process titled the Substance. This generates a youthful duplicate called Sue, culminating in a progressively toxic connection between them. October 17th, Paramount Plus
The Woman in Cabin 10 Film
This classic whodunit story features Knightley playing Laura, an ace reporter who opts for some time off from reporting on world issues to embark on a high-end voyage accompanied by a gravely sick wealthy inheritor and charitable figure, her partner, plus additional filthy rich individuals. But after a mysterious woman disappears from the ship during the evening and the entire crew insists she wasn't real, her journalistic curiosity kick in. Available now, on Netflix
Presence
Steven Soderbergh pushes his directorial skills with this nifty ghostly tale shot entirely from the perspective of a ghost. After a clan including mother Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe settles into their new suburban house, the camera – representing the ghost – follows them around. The daughter appears conscious of the supernatural presence, and it seems protective of her. However, the motive remains? The premise is enjoyable that doesn't outstay its welcome, with a twist that may be unexpected. Saturday 11 October, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, the Sky channel
Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy
Nicolas Cage embraces his eccentric image via this autobiographical spoof. He portrays a self-obsessed Hollywood actor named Nicolas Cage who accepts a lucrative offer to visit a festive event in Mallorca for the rich Javi Gutierrez. Contacted by the CIA to gather intel on the suspected cartel boss, his unconventional method is put to the test. October 11th, 9pm, Channel 4
The Black Phone
Scott Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller remains effective without requiring a continuation. Set in 1970s Colorado, a series of disappearances has rendered the local kids anxious. When Finney gets captured by “the Grabber” and held captive in a cellar, he fears a fatal end. But the disconnected phone mounted nearby keeps ringing, with spooky callers providing assistance, while the prophetic visions of his sister Gwen may be his salvation. A solid creepfest. This Saturday, late evening, on Film4
This Dramatic Portrait
In the struggle between faith and wealth, it's a knockout win for greed in Showalter's brilliantly over-the-top film adaptation of the disgraced televangelist plus her lawbreaking partner. Andrew Garfield portrays the greedy Jim, who states initially, asserting religious justification for riches. He and Tammy Faye set about profiting from the nation's religious faith. It's a riot of bad interior design, overdone appearance and insincerity, however Jessica Chastain succeeds to show the real-life figure in a likable light. Next Tuesday, early morning, on Film4
The Spy Mystery
The current week's second offering from the filmmaker is a espionage tale as sharp similar to the collars sported by Fassbender's British agent. He is tasked to identify a mole inside the organization out of five possibilities – one of whom is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. Each performer are experts of deadpan cool, leading to a delightful mind game of fact versus fiction unfolds. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela take part the clever spy entertainment. October 17th, multiple time slots, Sky Cinema Premiere
